Local 27 November Report

Greetings from that "Pearl of the Oyster" that is the IE. Well this will be short and sweet, well at least short. As I said last month the Local 27 Poker Run or not was a very big step towards profitable, We made dough! for ABATE of California. If you want the total you have to come to our meeting, I do not want to brag in the BW, but we could make our "Shares" for the year if we let it lay there. But we want to effect change so we'll need more dough. At the November meeting it was decided to continue with our "Spring Extravaganza" the "Bare Necessities" Run. Practically leaping out of their seats with enthusiasm were Kenny, Jack, & Greg begging to be the committee again. Well we decided to let'em do it again. Watch for the date and Location next month. I might add that of the very few "Gripes" about the Poker Run, there was a serious lack of VOLUNTEER WORKERS from the Local 27 roster to run the event. This is unacceptable folks, you can not regain or remain FREE without toil. Just throwing some $$ at it don't make it happen. When you work for it you also appreciate it more. I mean it folks we are down to 61 members, I think, and we had about 15 workers. Most were stuck at their station all day with no relief. A great debt is owed for those who did work and carried the water for the Local. In truth those were the only "Gripes" about the event I know of. So turn to folks, help the Local support the State Organization. That why were here, I think?

Membership Gal Ida Snyder made me a nice list of those who membership is lapsed or lapsing and of course I lost it so I can not name names but check your membership card and PLEASE RENEW!!!

In closing this month I wish to relate something. I read a new book last month titled "Times that Try Men's Souls". It is about George Washington's attack on Trenton N.J. on December 25, 1776. His troops started out the summer grandly but the British were grander and a series of retreats began. All advances gained were completely lost and in some cases it was near Davine providence that he escaped with as much of a force as he did, finally able to encamp in some safety across the Delaware a few miles from Trenton. The solders had lost much of their provisions in the retreat and many had no shoes or boots. Most of his troops enlistment would expire on Jan.,1. The Revolution was near lost. Washington sought one last gamble, spoke to his men of giving him one more chance before their enlistments were up, they acquiesced. Around 8:00 PM they began crossing the river by boat both men and cannons and horses. All night they plodded toward Trenton and the professional Hessian Army stationed there. Again many had burlap wrapped around their feet, no shoes. Before they got to Trenton two streams that swelled in the heavy rains had to be forded. Most were driven by the stirring words by Thomas Pain's latest work "the American Crisis". Getting to Trenton after all this they immediately formed up and fought with the determination and tenacity that made the haughty Hessian's beg mercy and quarter which was given! We are Americans not barbarians Washington told a Hessian Officer when he thanked him for his mercy, they had not been so generous the previous Fall.

I tell this tale to remind all of you of the sacrifice our forefathers made in forming this Great Nation and the harsh conditions endured by so many to bring the U.S. into being, I wonder, with this heritage, why does ABATE so want for membership and support? Think on this and maybe get a copy of Mr. Pain's work, get energized, we have work to do as These are the times that try men's (girls too) souls.

God Bless, C'ya, HR
